Dua for Sadness and Disappointment When Efforts are Met with Ingratitude

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my distress.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

Ahmad narrated in his Musnad (3712) from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no servant (of Allah) who is afflicted with distress and says: Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. (except that) Allah will remove his distress and replace his sadness with joy.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is incumbent upon everyone who hears them to learn them.'
