Dua for Comfort During Spiritual Dryness

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abd Laka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya h_ukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli-smin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel a lack of connection to Allah, a dullness in your spiritual practice, or a general sense of sadness and worry that seems to stem from your spiritual state. It's particularly potent when you feel disconnected from the Qur'an, which is meant to be a source of life and guidance for our hearts.

How to Read

When reciting, begin with sincerity and a clear intention. Call upon Allah using His beautiful names and attributes as mentioned in the dua. Imagine the Qur'an as the refreshing rain for a dry land, bringing life and vibrancy. Feel the words deeply, and ask Allah to allow you to experience its transformative power. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly when making this supplication, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Utter the words with conviction, trusting in Allah's power to answer.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua directly addresses spiritual dryness and its emotional toll. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'spring of the heart', we seek a renewal of faith and a vibrant connection to our Creator. It promises relief from sadness and worry by turning to the divine guidance and miraculous words of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself turned to this dua when he felt overwhelmed, demonstrating its power in seeking comfort and clarity.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries," except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief, and replace them with joy.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is necessary for all who hear them to learn them.' (Narrated by Ahmad and graded Hasan by scholars)
