When Sins Weigh You Down: A Plea for Allah's Boundless Mercy

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 1/391, 452

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, that You have revealed in Your Book, that You have taught to any of Your creation, or that You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

Once, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was with his companions, and a man came and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, which of the supplications is heard best?' He said: 'The supplication of a man in the darkness of the night, and the supplication of the oppressed. And the supplication of our Prophet ﷺ for his Ummah. And the supplication of his father Abraham (peace be upon him), saying: > **Arabic:** رَّبِّ إِنَّهُنَّ أَضْلَلْنَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ النَّاسِ ۖ فَمَن تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي ۖ وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ > **Translation:** "My Lord, they have led astray many of mankind. So whoever follows me, then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me, indeed You are Forgiving and Merciful." And when the Prophet ﷺ mentioned the supplication of Abraham, he raised his hands and said: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوْ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجِلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي. > **Translation:** "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'And it is said that these words are from Allah, the Exalted, the Great.'
