The Prophet's ﷺ Plea for Complete Repentance and Divine Protection

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1517

O Allah, I ask You for sincere repentance, and I ask You for the resolve to uphold it. And I ask You to forgive me my entire sin, its minor and major, its first and last, its public and private.

Allahumma inni as'aluka tawbatan nasuha, wa as'aluka 'anha al-'azma, wa as'aluka an taghfira li dhanbi kullahu, daqiqahu wa jalilahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu

Narrated by Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Tawbah nasuhah (sincere repentance) is that you regret the sin, and resolve not to return to it, just as the suckling child does not return to the milk.' He then mentioned the verse: 'O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance...' [Surah At-Tahrim 66:8]. The narrator then narrated the dua: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka tawbatan nasuha, wa as'aluka 'anha al-'azma, wa as'aluka an taghfira li dhanbi kullahu, daqiqahu wa jalilahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu.' (O Allah, I ask You for sincere repentance, and I ask You for the resolve to uphold it. And I ask You to forgive me my entire sin, its minor and major, its first and last, its public and private.)
