The Dua for Repentance After Temptation

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Ibn Hibban 522

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment against me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, by which You have revealed it in Your Book, or You have taught it to any of Your creation, or You have retained in Your knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant when one has succumbed to temptation, felt a pang of guilt, or recognized a deviation from Allah's path. It's a call for renewed spiritual strength and a plea for divine guidance after experiencing weakness. Reciting it immediately after realizing one has been led astray, or at any time one feels overwhelmed by worldly desires, can be a source of immense comfort and spiritual restoration.

How to Read

Begin by acknowledging your status as a servant of Allah, recognizing His absolute control and just decree. Utter the dua with sincerity and deep contemplation, focusing on the meaning of each word. It is recommended to recite it with a hopeful heart, understanding that Allah is Al-Ghafur (The All-Forgiving) and Ar-Rahim (The Most Merciful). While there are no strict rules on physical posture, a quiet and humble setting can enhance the feeling of devotion.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is exceptionally comprehensive, seeking not only forgiveness but also a profound transformation of the heart. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' it implies seeking renewal, growth, and life in faith. The request for it to be the 'light of the chest' signifies clarity and wisdom, dispelling confusion. Furthermore, it aims to remove sadness and anxiety, showing how spiritual well-being is directly linked to one's connection with Allah and His Book. This dua, when recited with earnestness, can bring about a sense of peace and a renewed commitment to righteousness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to a man who complained about distress and worry. He instructed him to perform ablution, pray two rak'ahs, and then recite this supplication. This context highlights its efficacy in times of personal struggle and the importance of combining supplication with prayer and seeking purity.
