The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Bakr, you have indeed asked Allah about something concerning what you find within yourself. Say: O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy upon me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful." So he recited this and found that it pleased him greatly. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no one who says this du'a during the day but will not be forgiven until the evening comes, and if he says it at night, he will not be forgiven until the morning comes, and it will be a cause of the forgiveness of his minor sins [for the like of it].' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me a du'a that I can recite in my prayer.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy upon me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.' Then he said: 'Say: O Allah, forgive me for all my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden.'"
