Repentance for Sins Committed in Times of Ease

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the decline of Your blessings, the change of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your wrath, and all that displeasures You.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatek.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when one is experiencing comfort, health, and prosperity. It serves as a reminder not to become complacent or neglect one's duties to Allah during times of ease, as these are often when subtle sins or heedlessness can creep in. Recite it regularly, especially in the morning and evening, to maintain a state of awareness and gratitude.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a genuine sense of reliance on Allah. Understand that ease can sometimes lead to arrogance or forgetting the Creator, and this supplication is a proactive measure against such spiritual pitfalls. It should be said with humility, recognizing that all blessings are from Allah and can be withdrawn.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is comprehensive in seeking refuge from spiritual and worldly decline. By seeking protection from the cessation of blessings, the loss of health, unexpected punishment, and Allah's displeasure, one actively guards against the negative consequences of heedlessness during good times. It fosters a constant state of remembrance (dhikr) and prevents one from taking Allah's favors for granted. It helps in maintaining a balanced perspective, ensuring that ease leads to greater worship and gratitude, rather than a descent into sin.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may ask Allah.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for 'afiyah (well-being).' I stayed for a day, then I came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may ask Allah.' He said to me: 'O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' I stayed for a day, then I came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may ask Allah.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and 'afiyah in my religion and my worldly affairs, my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my 'awrah (that which is private) and calm my fears. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your greatness lest I be consumed from beneath me.' (And he mentioned a similar wording for the other one). Al-Abbas said: 'And I asked him: 'O Messenger of Allah, how should I supplicate?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the decline of Your blessings, the change of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your wrath, and all that displeasures You.'" Sahih Muslim 2739.
