It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to give a sermon on the day of the Conquest (of Makkah) and said: 'O people, Allah has taken away from you the arrogance of the pre-Islamic era and the pride in ancestry. All people are from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab; a red-skinned person has no superiority over a black-skinned person, nor a black-skinned person over a red-skinned person, except by piety and good conduct. Verily, Allah is most noble and most knowing. O people, (the matter of) spending money and the dealing with disputes and matters should be on the basis of equality and justice. O people, I have left you with what, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.' Then he raised his voice and said: 'Verily, Allah has commanded me to take an oath from you that you will not bring any partners with Him, that you will not steal, that you will not commit adultery, that you will not kill your children, that you will not utter slander which you yourselves have forged, and that you will not disobey me in any good matter.' Then he said: 'O Allah, bear witness.' Then he said: 'I ask Allah for your forgiveness, O people, and I ask Him for mercy.' He then began with himself and said: 'I ask Allah for forgiveness for the believer men and the believer women.' Then he said: 'O Allah, forgive my sin, all of it, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the open and the secret, my companions and my errors.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make me pleased with what You have decreed for me, and bring blessings into my life after the hard times, until what I do is done with good intentions and what is due to me is easy to obtain.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, righteousness, chastity and abundance of sustenance.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the means of attaining Your bounty, and the means of forgiveness, and the safe return from every sin, and the mercy, and the good success in all deeds, and the good wishes for the chastisement of Hell, and the seeking of refuge from the evil of the Fire.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I ask You for contentment after decree, and a cool life after death, and the delight of looking at Your Face, and the eagerness to meet You, without any harmful hardship or misleading trial.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the best of what You give to Your slaves, the best of what You give in this world and the Hereafter. I seek refuge in You from doubt after certainty, and from misguidance after guidance, and from the worst of deeds and the worst of desires. I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what You know, and I ask You for the greatest of what You love.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make me love faith and adorn it in my heart, and make me hate disbelief, and disobedience, and sin, and make me among those who are rightly guided.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make me love the poor, and have mercy on them. O Allah, make me a body free from burdens, and grant me sustenance without difficulty, and keep me away from the punishment of the grave, and grant me refuge from the punishment of Hell-fire, and grant me refuge from the evil of the Day of Resurrection, and grant me refuge from the evil of the Day of Judgment.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make me contented with what You have given me, and protect me, and grant me blessing in it, and give me a good successor after me. For verily, You are forgiving and merciful.' He then said: 'The servant may say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, sustain me, accept my repentance.' He said: 'Verily, Allah is pleased with His servant when he says: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, sustain me, accept my repentance.' It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.'
