Dua for Repentance and Rebuilding Faith After Doubt

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affair and make firm our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people. O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed it to anyone from Your creation, or You taught it to anyone from Your creation, or You have kept it to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my distress.

Rabbana-ghfir lana dhunoobana wa israafana fi amrina wa thabbit aqdaamana wansurna 'alal-qawmil-kafireen. Allahumma inni 'abd-uka, ibnu 'abd-ika, ibnu amat-ika, naasiyati biyad-ika, maadin fiyya hukm-uka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'-uka, as'aluka bikulli-ism-in huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalq-ika, aw anzaltahu fi kitab-ika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabeea qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you feel the weight of past mistakes, or when doubts about faith begin to creep in. Recite it in the quiet moments of the night, after obligatory prayers, or whenever your heart feels a pull towards repentance and a need to reaffirm your connection with Allah.

How to Read

Begin with sincere intention and humility. Facing the Qiblah can add a sense of reverence. Raise your hands if appropriate, as the Prophet ﷺ did when making dua. Pour your heart out, acknowledging your shortcomings, and placing your complete trust in Allah's mercy and power. The second part of the dua, asking to make the Qur'an the light of your heart, is a beautiful way to seek guidance and clarity when faced with confusion or doubt.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a profound request for forgiveness for sins and excesses, asking for steadfastness in faith ('thabbit aqdaamana'), and seeking divine help against disbelief. It addresses both personal spiritual health and the broader struggle against disbelief. The second part, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ, directly links the spiritual well-being of the heart to the Qur'an, highlighting its role as a source of comfort, guidance, and healing from sadness and worry. This is essential for rebuilding faith, as doubt often stems from a disconnection from this divine light.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) experienced a hardship, he would say: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed it to anyone from Your creation, or taught it to anyone from Your creation, or You have kept it to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my distress.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306) The first part of the dua is a supplication found in the Qur'an, recited by the believers: 'Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our extravagance in our affair and make firm our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.' (Surah Al-Imran 3:147)
