Dua for Steadfastness After Repentance

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3405

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and for determination in righteousness. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your favors and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which You know.

Allahumma inni as'aluka ath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam.

When to Read

This profound dua should be recited regularly, especially after completing a sincere act of repentance. It's a powerful way to fortify your resolve and seek Allah's help in remaining firm on the straight path, ensuring that your return to Him is permanent and not followed by a relapse into sin. Make it a habit after every prayer, or at least once daily.

How to Read

This supplication is comprehensive, asking Allah for inner strength, guidance, gratitude, and protection. Recite it with sincerity and a humble heart, focusing on each word and its meaning. Imagine yourself asking your Creator directly for the ability to stay away from what displeases Him. Understanding the Arabic is beneficial, but the intention and heartfelt plea are paramount. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us for seeking something from Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of this dua is seeking Allah's aid for *'Thabat'* (steadfastness) and *'Azeemah'* (determination) on the path of guidance. When we sincerely repent, we are in a vulnerable state, and the Shaytan is particularly eager to pull us back. This dua is a shield, asking Allah to grant us the strength to resist temptation and remain committed to His obedience. It also encompasses asking for gratitude for past blessings and a pure heart, all vital components for a lasting change of behavior.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never neglected to say these supplications in the morning and evening: 'O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and keep me safe from what frightens me. O Allah, protect me from in front of me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your might from being taken by Your punishment from beneath me.' And when the morning came, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, and pure provision, and accepted deeds.' And when the evening came, he would say the same. Another narration states: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us this supplication: 'O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and for determination in righteousness. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your favors and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which You know.'
