Dua for Seeking Forgiveness from Allah's Displeasure

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 486

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لاَ أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot count Your praises; You are as You have praised Yourself.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bi ridhaka min sakhatika, wa bi mu'afatika min 'uqubatika, wa a'udhu bika minka, la uhsi thana'an 'alayka, anta kama athnayta 'ala nafsik

You can recite it any time you feel the need for sincere repentance and a re-establishment of your connection with Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep sense of humility. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: seeking refuge in Allah's pleasure, His pardon, and protection from His displeasure and punishment. Acknowledge your inability to fully praise Him, recognizing that only He knows Himself best. It’s best to raise your hands slightly when making this supplication, as is the practice for many duas, and to be in a state of Wudu if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a profound recognition of Allah's attributes and our reliance on Him. By seeking refuge in His pleasure and forgiveness, we actively turn away from His displeasure and punishment. The phrase 'I seek refuge in You from You' highlights our complete dependence on Allah for all matters, even from the potential consequences of our own actions that might displease Him. It’s a comprehensive expression of Tawbah (repentance) and a way to safeguard oneself from spiritual harm.
