Dua for Repentance When Experiencing a Hardened Heart

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1549

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart that does not fear (You), and from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not heard. O Allah, You have taken hold of my shortcomings and my feeble efforts and my lowliness in the sight of people. O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Most Merciful of the merciful, cast Your mercy into my heart, and grant me relief and a way out from my affair.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min 'ilmin la yanfa', wa min qalbin la yakhsha', wa min nafsin la tashba', wa min du'a'in la yusma'. Allahumma anta akhadhta biqusur yadi wa qillati hيلati, wa hawani 'alan-nas.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you notice a distancing from Allah, a lack of feeling in your heart during prayer or remembrance, or a general sense of spiritual dryness. It's a plea when you feel your heart has become insensitive to faith, the Quran, or reminders of Allah's greatness. Make it a part of your regular supplications, especially after prayers.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and humility, understanding the weight of seeking refuge from such serious afflictions. Raise your hands as you would during other supplications. Reflect deeply on each phrase, particularly the plea for Allah to cast mercy into your heart and grant relief. Repetition of 'Ya arhamar-rahimin' emphasizes the core request.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication seeks refuge from various forms of spiritual and worldly harm. Specifically addressing 'a heart that does not fear (You)' (قلب لا يخشع - qalbin la yakhsha') is a direct plea against the hardening of the heart. By asking Allah to 'cast Your mercy into my heart,' you are seeking the softening and purification that only divine mercy can bring. This dua also seeks an escape from difficult circumstances ('relief and a way out').

Source & Authentication

The referenced hadith in Sunan Abi Dawud (1549) is a longer supplication of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which includes seeking refuge from the 'passing away of Your blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all of Your displeasure.' While the specific combination for a hardened heart is an application, the Prophet's ﷺ practice of seeking refuge in Allah from spiritual ailments is well-established. Another relevant hadith is: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The supplication of any one of you is granted as long as he does not hasten, and he does not say: 'I have supplicated, but I was not answered."' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6340, Sahih Muslim 2703). This encourages persistence in seeking Allah's help for a hardened heart.
