Dua for Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness Amidst Allah's Trials

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the transformation of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik

When to Read

This dua is profound for moments when you feel tested, when life's challenges seem overwhelming, or when you fear falling short of Allah's grace. It's especially relevant when facing trials that might stem from one's own shortcomings, prompting a deep sense of repentance and a plea for divine protection from further difficulties. Recite it after prayers, during times of worry, or whenever you feel the need to reconnect with Allah and seek His steadfast mercy.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Understand that seeking refuge is an act of acknowledging Allah's ultimate power and your dependence on Him. While the words themselves are potent, they are most effective when accompanied by a genuine feeling of repentance, a commitment to avoid sins, and a steadfast trust in Allah's plan. It's best recited facing the Qiblah, with hands raised in supplication, and with conviction in your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encapsulates a comprehensive plea for protection not just from obvious harm, but from the subtle erosion of divine favor. By seeking refuge from the 'demise of Your blessings' and the 'transformation of Your protection,' you acknowledge that trials can manifest as the withdrawal of what you once enjoyed. The plea against 'suddenness of Your vengeance' and 'all Your displeasure' speaks to a desire for gradual reckoning and a life lived in accordance with Allah's contentment, rather than being caught unaware by His wrath. It fosters a constant state of awareness and reliance on Allah, encouraging continuous repentance and a proactive effort to stay within His good pleasure.

An-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi yaum al-fath wa al-fath al-mubīn, Allahumma anzil 'alayna khayran wa taqqinā, Allahumma innī as'aluka 'ajla ma 'indaka wa khayra ma jamma'ta 'indaka, wa awlinā ma qadraka, waghfir lanā wa li-ikhwāninā alladhīna sabaqūna bil-īmān, wa lā taj'al fī qulūbinā ghillan lilladhīna āmanū, Rabbana innaka Ra'ūf al-Rahīm. Wa kāna yusalli 'alā 'amri ibn al-Ḥaẓm, wa kāna yqūl: Yā Allah, my Lord, my Master, my He who is most deserving of fear. He also used to say: Allahumma innī a'udhu bika min zawāli ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'āfiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma innī as'aluka an ufawwiḍa amrī ilayk, wa ulj'i'a amrī ilayk, wa alji'a raghbatī ilayk, fa lā arjū ijjzā'an illā minka, wa lā najā'a illā bika.
