Dua for Repentance When Compelled: Seeking Allah's Mercy

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or which You have kept exclusively for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen. I ask You to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the banisher of my anxiety. But I inform You that calamities are not lifted from us, and they have indeed befallen us. I ask You to remove them from us. Indeed, nothing else suffices for you all but this.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. Wa lakin ukhbiruka annahu la yurafa' 'anna al-bala', wa qad nazala bina. As'aluka an takshifahu 'anna. Annahu la yujzi' 'ankum illa dhalik.

When to Read

This profound supplication is particularly relevant when one finds themselves in a situation where they have committed a sin, or are struggling to resist temptation, due to severe duress, coercion, or extreme hardship. It is a moment to turn to Allah with sincerity, acknowledging His absolute power and our dependence on Him, especially when external pressures lead to actions we would otherwise avoid. Recite this when feeling overwhelmed by circumstances and the weight of a sin committed under such conditions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with humility and a sincere heart, raising your hands as you would in other supplications. Begin by acknowledging your state as a servant of Allah, completely under His control. Emphasize your reliance on His perfect names and attributes, which encompass all of His vast knowledge and power. While the specific wording about the Qur'an is beneficial for general well-being, the core of this dua is the plea for relief from hardship and the removal of sins committed under compulsion, recognizing that only Allah can truly alleviate our suffering. Be specific in your heart about the duress you are under and the sin committed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful tool for a Muslim facing sin committed under duress. It reaffirms Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) by acknowledging His absolute dominion and control over all affairs. It teaches us to turn to Allah in times of extreme difficulty, seeking His mercy and relief from both the immediate hardship and its consequences. By invoking His perfect names, we are seeking Him through the very essence of His being, which is a source of immense strength and hope. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to express a state of utter dependence on Allah, especially when facing trials that could lead to sin.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'No servant (of Allah) is afflicted with anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or which You have kept exclusively for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen. I ask You to make the Qur’an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the banisher of my anxiety. But I inform You that calamities are not lifted from us, and they have indeed befallen us. I ask You to remove them from us. Indeed, nothing else suffices for you all but this.' It was said to him: 'These words should be learned by heart.'
