Dua for Repentance: The Master of Forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar)

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me, and I am Your slave. I hold to Your covenant and Your promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

When to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite Sayyid al-Istighfar daily, in the morning and evening. During fasting, its recitation takes on added significance. It is particularly beneficial to recite it after your Suhoor, as you begin your fast, seeking Allah's protection from sins throughout the day. Recite it before Iftar, as this is a blessed time for dua. Throughout the day, whenever you feel you might have fallen short in your conduct, spoken an ill word, or let a bad thought cross your mind, turn to this dua for immediate repentance. It is also highly recommended during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially Laylat al-Qadr, to seek comprehensive forgiveness.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, conviction, and full understanding of its profound meaning. Reflect on each phrase: acknowledging Allah's Lordship, your servitude, His blessings, and your shortcomings. Feel the weight of your sins and the vastness of Allah's mercy. When you confess your sins, let it be from the heart, truly regretting them and resolving not to repeat them. When you ask for forgiveness, do so with certainty that only Allah can forgive. Make it a personal conversation with your Creator, pouring out your heart in humility and hope.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever says it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before evening, will be one of the people of Paradise; and whoever says it during the night with firm faith in it, and dies before morning, will be one of the people of Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). This powerful dua ensures comprehensive forgiveness for all sins, major and minor, known and unknown. When recited during fasting, it helps purify your fast from any imperfections, minor transgressions, or inadvertent errors that might diminish its reward. It elevates your spiritual state, strengthens your bond with Allah, and serves as a shield against shaytan's whispers to commit sins. By seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings in your fasting, you aim for a fast that is fully accepted by Allah, earning you His immense pleasure and ultimately, Paradise.

Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The best supplication for seeking forgiveness is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu, Abu'u laka bini'matika 'alayya, wa abu'u laka bidhanbi faghfir li fainnahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta.' (O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me, and I am Your slave. I hold to Your covenant and Your promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.)' The Prophet ﷺ added: 'Whoever says it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before evening, will be one of the people of Paradise; and whoever says it during the night with firm faith in it, and dies before morning, will be one of the people of Paradise.'
