O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or that You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the end of my worries. O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or that You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the night and day the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the end of my worries. O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or that You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the light of truth in my sight, guidance in my religion, certainty in my heart, faith in my soul, wisdom in my intellect, strength in my body, patience in my resolve, and gratitude to You as long as You keep me alive, and independence from Your creation. O Allah, make me grateful to You, mindful of You, fearful of You, obedient to You, humble before You, and turning to You. My Lord, aid me and do not aid against me, grant me victory and do not grant victory against me, plan for me and do not plan against me, guide me and make my guidance easy, and grant me victory over whoever oppresses me. My Lord, make me grateful to You, mindful of You, awe-struck before You, humble before You, and turning to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sins, answer my supplication, make my argument firm, guide my heart, set my tongue straight, and remove the malice from my chest.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is excellent to recite when feeling overwhelmed by one's sins, especially those committed due to ignorance or lack of knowledge. It is also perfect for seeking Allah's assistance in overcoming wrongdoing and strengthening one's faith and resolve. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly potent during the times when duas are more likely to be answered, such as after prayers, during the last third of the night, or on Fridays.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, humility, and a firm conviction in Allah's mercy and power. It's beneficial to pause and reflect on the meaning of each phrase, truly internalizing the surrender to Allah, the reliance on His attributes, and the requests for guidance and strength. Start by acknowledging your status as a servant of Allah and your complete dependence on Him. Then, invoke Him using His most beautiful Names, as mentioned in the dua itself, emphasizing that He is the source of all knowledge and power. Repeating phrases like 'Allahumma inni 'abdka...' reinforces this understanding of one's position before the Creator. Finally, beseech Allah to grant you the blessings mentioned, including guidance, patience, and gratitude, and to accept your repentance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of tawbah (repentance) and seeking Allah's help. By acknowledging one's servitude ('abdka') and complete reliance on Allah ('nasyati biyadika'), the supplicant establishes a humble posture before the Creator. The invocation of Allah's unique and perfect Names highlights the trust in His attributes, such as His knowledge, power, and mercy. The dua specifically asks for the Qur'an to be the source of solace and guidance for the heart, reflecting the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ own reliance on revelation. Furthermore, it seeks not just forgiveness but also inner transformation, asking for light in one's sight, guidance in religion, certainty, faith, wisdom, strength, patience, and gratitude. The concluding requests for Allah to aid, guide, and grant victory against oppression are powerful pleas for divine support in overcoming trials and adversaries, both internal and external. This dua embodies the essence of turning back to Allah, seeking His pleasure, and striving to live a life pleasing to Him, even after having stumbled.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'No person is afflicted with distress or grief, and says: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment over me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, by which You have taught it to anyone of Your creation, or revealed it in Your Book, or which You have kept in the possession of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the light of my heart, and the light of my chest, and the banisher of my sadness, and the end of my worry" - except that Allah will remove his distress and grief, and replace them with joy.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is fitting for whoever hears them to learn them.'
