Dua for Repentance from Shirk

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7508

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You that I know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min an ushrika bika shay'an a'lamuhu, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lamuhu

When to Read

This is a profound dua to be recited regularly, especially when reflecting on one's faith and seeking to purify it. It's particularly relevant when feeling doubt, seeing acts of shirk, or even after committing minor unintentional shirk. Making it a part of your daily supplications, perhaps after your obligatory prayers, is highly beneficial.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere intention to purify your worship for Allah alone. Understand the gravity of shirk, even in its subtle forms. Reflect on your actions and intentions, ensuring they are solely directed towards Allah. Make this plea from the heart, recognizing your own limitations and Allah's absolute power and knowledge.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the most severe sin in Islam: shirk (associating partners with Allah). By seeking refuge from known shirk and forgiveness for unknown shirk, one actively works to maintain the purity of their Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). Shirk, even unknowingly, invalidates one's deeds. This supplication is a safeguard, protecting the believer from falling into this unforgivable sin if they die upon it, as Allah states: 'Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.' (An-Nisa 4:48). This dua helps preserve the validity of all other good deeds.
