O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness, and a reliever of my worries.
Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'alul-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.
When to Read
This powerful dua is particularly fitting when reflecting on past sins, especially those committed in private. Recite it when you feel a deep desire to purify your heart and seek Allah's forgiveness after acknowledging a wrong, whether in your private moments of reflection or during specific times for supplication like after prayers or before breaking your fast.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be sincere and earnest when making dua. Begin by acknowledging Allah's sovereignty and your dependence on Him, as described in the opening of this hadith. Utter the words with a clear intention of repentance and a firm resolve to turn back to Allah. Raising your hands slightly is also part of the Sunnah during supplication, though not exclusive to this dua. Most importantly, have sincere hope and certainty that Allah is Most Merciful and will respond.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, focuses on seeking Allah's help through the immense power and light of the Qur'an. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' we are seeking renewal and life for our souls, which can be dulled by sin. It offers solace from sadness and worry, highlighting the Qur'an's role as a source of comfort and guidance. The very act of making such a comprehensive dua signifies a turning point, a sincere desire to mend one's relationship with Allah, which is the essence of repentance.

Narrated Abdullah: While we were with the Prophet (ﷺ) one night, he said, 'What do you think about 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud)?' They said, 'He is a slave of Allah; he does not miss it (i.e., visiting Allah's enemies).' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'I think he will not speak the truth unless he speaks it when he is awake, or he will not die unless he is martyred. So 'Abdullah went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said to him, 'What were you saying about me?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'I was saying that he is a slave of Allah, and he does not miss it (i.e., visiting Allah's enemies). I think he will not speak the truth unless he speaks it when he is awake, or he will not die unless he is martyred.' Then the Prophet (ﷺ) taught him a dua, saying, 'Say: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness, and a reliever of my worries.' Abdullah said, 'So I learned it from the Prophet (ﷺ) and I have always called upon Allah with it and will continue to do so.' So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to him, 'Then you will have indeed been given more (good) and a lot of good.' Sahih al-Bukhari 6346
