Dua for Repentance from Lying and Dishonesty

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1500

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَذِبِ وَالزُّورِ وَالْخِيَانَةِ.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from lying, falsehood, and treachery.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal kadhibi wazzuri wal khiyanah.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite whenever you feel tempted to lie or engage in dishonest behavior. It's also beneficial to make it a regular part of your supplications, perhaps after your obligatory prayers or during the late hours of the night when Allah descends to the lowest heaven.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Remember that repentance is not just saying the words, but also having the firm resolve to abandon the sin and strive to live a life of honesty and integrity. Feel the weight of the words and the significance of seeking Allah's protection from such destructive traits.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the sin of lying and dishonesty, seeking Allah's protection from them. Lying is a major sin in Islam, considered a sign of hypocrisy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned, 'Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie until he is registered with Allah as a liar.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094). By seeking refuge in Allah, we are actively working against these sins and asking for His grace to guide us to truthfulness and trustworthiness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal hammi wal hazan, wal 'ajzi wal kasal, wal bukhli wal jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men). And he would also say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal 'ilmid-la yanfa', wa min qalbin la yakhsha', wa min nafsin la tashba', wa min da'watin la yustajabu laha.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear You, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered). Another narration includes: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal kadhibi wazzuri wal khiyanah.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from lying, falsehood, and treachery.) — Sunan Abi Dawud 1500, graded Hasan.
