Dua for Repentance from Excessive Laughter

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5087

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي جِدِّي وَهَزْلِي، وَخَطَئِي وَعَمْدِي، وَعَزْمِي وَهَزْلِي، وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدِي

O Allah, forgive me my seriousness and my jesting, my unintentional and my intentional mistakes, my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me.

Allahumma-ghfirli jiddi wa hazli, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi

How to Read

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to seek comprehensive forgiveness. It acknowledges that even in jest or seriousness, we can err. Excessive laughter, while natural, can sometimes lead to heedlessness, forgetting Allah, or making light of religious matters. This prayer seeks pardon for all these potential slips, whether intentional or not, and is a means to purify oneself and return to a state pleasing to Allah. It reflects the Prophet's ﷺ own prayer for encompassing forgiveness, demonstrating the importance of seeking Allah's mercy for all our states.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A believer sees his sins as if he were at the foot of a mountain, fearing that it may fall upon him. But a hypocrite sees his sins as if they were flies passing by his nose; he says thus (with his finger) and they pass by him.' And Allahumma-ghfirli jiddi wa hazli, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi (O Allah, forgive me my seriousness and my jesting, my unintentional and my intentional mistakes, my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me) was narrated by Ibn Majah, and also by Abu Dawud, with the wording: 'O Allah, forgive me what I have done in earnest and what I have done in jest, what I have done by mistake and what I have done deliberately. All of these are in me.' This latter wording was authenticated by Al-Albani.
