Dua for Repentance and Strength to Overcome Addictions

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to invoke when feeling overwhelmed by the struggle against addiction. It's excellent to include in your daily supplications, especially after prayers, or during times of personal reflection and when seeking Allah's help to break free from destructive habits.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Visualize yourself seeking Allah's protection and strength. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly while making this dua, as is the practice when seeking refuge. Understand that this dua is a means; true change comes from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) after you have put in your best effort to abstain from the addiction.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses seeking refuge from several significant afflictions that can plague a person, including those that often accompany or lead to addictions: anxiety, sorrow, helplessness, laziness, cowardice, and being overcome by debt or the oppression of others. By seeking Allah's protection from these, we are also indirectly seeking strength to overcome the internal and external struggles that fuel addictions. It reminds us that true strength and freedom come from our Creator, and acknowledging our reliance on Him is the first step towards overcoming any challenge.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, and the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369). This hadith highlights the Prophet's ﷺ awareness of the various challenges people face and his reliance on Allah's protection against them. The 'overpowering of men' can manifest in many ways, including the pressure to engage in harmful activities or the inability to resist negative influences, which are crucial considerations when dealing with addiction.
