اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا تَجْعَلُهَا لِي عِصْمَةً فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ
O Allah, I ask You for a sincere repentance, which You make a safeguard for me in this world and the Hereafter.
Allahumma inni as'aluka tawbatan nasuha taj'aluha li 'ismatan fid-dunya wal-akhirah
When to Read
This dua is perfect for any time you feel the pull towards Allah after a period of distance. Recite it especially after performing Wudu (ablution) and praying two rak'ahs, a time when du'a is known to be readily accepted. It's particularly poignant in the quiet of the night, during the blessed months like Ramadan, or in the sacred lands of Makkah and Madinah.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heavy heart, acknowledging your shortcomings. Raise your hands in supplication, just as you would for any other dua. Focus on the meaning of the words: asking for a repentance so pure and true that it becomes a shield against falling back into heedlessness. Imagine Allah's mercy enveloping you as you plead for His guidance and protection.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit is attaining sincere repentance (Tawbah Nasuha), which is the true path back to Allah. A sincere repentance is one that leaves no trace of the sin, fills the heart with regret, and resolves never to return to it. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) taught us: 'The one who repents from a sin is like one who did not sin.' (Ibn Majah 4240, Sahih). This sincerity, as sought in the dua, becomes a safeguard against future transgressions, protecting both our worldly life and our eternal hereafter. Allah Himself promises immense reward for those who turn back to Him: 'And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.' (An-Nur 24:31).
Source & Authentication
The specific hadith text is a supplication taught to a companion. When a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said, 'I have sinned, so can I have repentance?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned away. The man came to him from the other side and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have sinned, so can I have repentance?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned his face away from him again. Then the man came to him from the side of his head and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have sinned, so can I have repentance?' He said: 'Pray, and say: O Allah, I ask You for a sincere repentance, which You make a safeguard for me in this world and the Hereafter.' So he said that, and it was said to him: 'Indeed, Allah has accepted your repentance.' (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 12248)
