Dua for Repentance and Rejection of Shaytan's Whispers

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the turning of Your favor, and the sudden vengeance of Your punishment, and all that You are displeased with. And I seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, and the attainment of misery, and the evil of fate, and the rejoicing of enemies.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhathik, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'i.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against the worst of evils and misfortunes. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge our weakness and dependence on Him, a crucial step in sincere repentance. It helps in rejecting Shaytan's whispers by actively seeking Allah's protection against his deceitful suggestions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to seek refuge from calamities, the consequences of sins (which can lead to misfortune and the rejoicing of enemies), and the sting of misery, all of which are often exacerbated by succumbing to Shaytan's temptations.

Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman narrated that his father said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them [i.e., his companions] in the prayer: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhadhib-jahannam wa min 'adhadhib-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahyah wal-ma'atih. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharril-mas'i wal-maghram (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and what I have committed." Then a man said: 'And 'audhu bika min zawali ni'matik (And I seek refuge in You from the change of Your blessings).' So he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: "Yes, seek refuge in Allah from the change of Your blessings, and the cessation of the favors You granted, and the sudden vengeance of Your punishment, and all that You are displeased with. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'i (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, and the attainment of misery, and the evil of fate, and the rejoicing of enemies)."
