Dua for Repentance and Reclaiming Lost Blessings

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5050

O Allah, forgive me for all my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden, and the sins of every part of me. O Allah, I ask You for the mercy which is not sent down except by Your command, and which no one else possesses. I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You to overlook my slip, and to restore my blessings to me, and to loosen a knot from my tongue, and to make my heart understand.

Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu, wa dhanba kulli 'udwin minni. Allahumma inni as'aluka ar-rahmata allati la tanzilu 'ala man 'indaka, wa la yamlikuha ghayruka, wa as'aluka al-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka an tuqilani 'athrati, wa an turji'a ilayya ni'mati, wa an tuhilla 'uqdatan min lisani, wa tafqaha qalbi.

When to Read

This is a powerful comprehensive dua for seeking Allah's forgiveness and asking Him to restore what might have been lost due to our shortcomings. It's best recited when reflecting on one's sins, after committing a mistake, or as part of a regular supplication, especially during times of earnest seeking like the last third of the night or after prayers.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. It's recommended to raise your hands as you would in any supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging your need for Allah's mercy and forgiveness. It's beautiful to also follow this with other specific duas for repentance, like the Sayyid al-Istighfar.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses a profound request for comprehensive forgiveness, covering all aspects of one's sins. It also seeks Allah's immense mercy, which is the ultimate source of all good, and asks for both worldly and eternal well-being ('afiyah). The request to 'overlook my slip' and 'restore my blessings' is particularly relevant for those feeling that sin has led to a loss of guidance, peace, or provisions. It aims to mend what was broken and bring back the favor of Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: I said to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ): 'Teach me a supplication which I can recite in my prayer.' He said: 'Recite: O Allah, I have wronged myself unjustly, and no one forgives sins except Thee. So, grant me forgiveness from Thyself, and have mercy upon me. Verily, Thou art the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). And this other supplication was taught to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he complained about not remembering the Quran well: Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu, wa dhanba kulli 'udwin minni. Allahumma inni as'aluka ar-rahmata allati la tanzilu 'ala man 'indaka, wa la yamlikuha ghayruka, wa as'aluka al-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka an tuqilani 'athrati, wa an turji'a ilayya ni'mati, wa an tuhilla 'uqdatan min lisani, wa tafqaha qalbi. (Sunan Abi Dawud 5050 - Hasan).
