Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa il lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal khasireen
When to Read
This dua is incredibly powerful when we find ourselves or our children straying from the right path, or when we've made mistakes. Recite it during times of reflection, after salah, or whenever you feel the weight of disobedience or the need for Allah's forgiveness for yourself and your family. It's a plea born from understanding our own shortcomings and the immense need for Allah's mercy, especially when it concerns the well-being of our children.
How to Read
Recite this ayah with sincerity and a deep sense of humility. Picture yourself and your child standing before Allah, acknowledging your faults. Raise your hands in supplication if you can, especially after completing your obligatory prayers. Focus on the meaning of the words โ the recognition of wrongdoing and the earnest hope for Allah's forgiveness and mercy. Make it a personal plea, asking Allah to guide your child and accept whatever good deeds you both manage to do amidst your struggles.
Virtues & Benefits
This verse, recited by Adam and Hawwa (may Allah be pleased with them) after their mistake, is a foundational dua for repentance. It teaches us the essential elements of seeking forgiveness: acknowledging our sins ('we have wronged ourselves') and explicitly asking for Allah's forgiveness and mercy. By reciting this, we align ourselves with the prophetic way of seeking tawbah, hoping that our repentance is accepted and that we are saved from loss, both in this life and the hereafter. It reminds us that our efforts, including those of our children, are only accepted through Allah's mercy.
