Dua for Repentance After Hurting Someone

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 771

O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in the past and what I will do in the future, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and what I have exceeded in, and what You know better than I. You are the One Who sends forth and the One Who delays. There is no god but You.

When to Read

This powerful dua is for any time you realize you've wronged someone, whether through words, actions, or even negative thoughts that may have led to harm. It's especially important to recite when you genuinely feel remorse and wish to seek Allah's forgiveness not only for the sin itself but for the impact it had. Say it in solitude, with a sincere heart, after any wrongdoing that weighs on your conscience.

How to Read

Recite this dua with humility and deep sincerity. Imagine yourself standing before Allah (SWT), acknowledging your mistakes. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this comprehensive form of repentance, so it's vital to mean every word. It's beneficial to also seek forgiveness from the person you wronged, if possible, and try to make amends. This dua should be coupled with a firm resolve not to repeat the offense.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is incredibly comprehensive. It asks for forgiveness for past sins ('what I have done in the past'), future sins ('what I will do in the future'), hidden sins ('what I have concealed'), open sins ('what I have done openly'), transgressions ('what I have exceeded in'), and even those sins that are unknown to us but known to Allah ('what You know better than I'). It acknowledges Allah's absolute control over time and destiny ('You are the One Who sends forth and the One Who delays') and affirms His sole right to worship ('There is no god but You'). This makes it a profound tool for cleansing the heart and soul, seeking comprehensive divine mercy, and strengthening one's connection with the Creator after falling short.
