Dua for Repentance After Consuming Haram Food or Income

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 6117

O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for what I have brought forth and what I have left behind, for what I have concealed and what I have revealed, and for what You know better about me than I. You are the Advancer and You are the Delayer; there is no god but You.

Allahumma inni astaghfiruka mimma qaddamt wa mimma akhkhart, wa mimma asrartu wa mimma a'lantu, wa mimma anta a'lamu bihi minni, antal muqaddimu wa antal mu'akhkhiru, la ilaha illa anta.

When to Read

This profound supplication can be recited at any time, but it is particularly potent when seeking sincere repentance, especially after realizing one has consumed something impermissible, whether it be food, drink, or income derived from unlawful means. Make it a habit after Salah, or during the quiet hours of the night when you can focus on your connection with Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea for forgiveness. Ensure you understand the meaning of the words. It is beneficial to raise your hands slightly in supplication. Focus on the vastness of Allah's mercy and His knowledge of all things. Imagine seeking refuge in His forgiveness, acknowledging your shortcomings, and reaffirming your belief in His sole power and divinity.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a comprehensive plea for forgiveness, covering past actions, hidden deeds, and even those we may be unaware of. By acknowledging Allah as the ultimate controller of time and destiny (Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu'akhkhir), we recognize our dependence on Him and the futility of seeking success or avoiding harm through any means other than Him. It is a powerful statement of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and a recognition of His absolute sovereignty, essential for a sincere repentance, especially when dealing with the spiritual pollution of haram sustenance.

Source & Authentication

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him): 'Teach me a supplication which I may recite in my prayer.' He said: 'Recite: Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indika, warhamni innaka antal Ghafurur Rahim. (O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You, so forgive me with Your forgiveness and have mercy upon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.)' Abu Bakr said: 'And I recited this.' He said: 'He (the Holy Prophet) said to me: Say: Allahumma inni astaghfiruka mimma qaddamt wa mimma akhkhart, wa mimma asrartu wa mimma a'lantu, wal minal 'ilmi bima 'indi, illa ma akhrajta; wa atubu ilaik. Wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. (O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness for what I have brought forth and what I have left behind, for what I have concealed and what I have revealed, and for what You know better about me than I. You are the Advancer and You are the Delayer; there is no god but You.)' This narration is slightly different and refers to a slightly different dua, but the essence of seeking comprehensive forgiveness from Allah is present. The dua provided in the main fields is more directly related to general repentance and is widely applicable. The core principle is seeking Allah's forgiveness for all our wrongdoings.
