Dua for Forgiveness of Sins Committed by the Limbs

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3726

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the guide away from my worries, and an aid for me against [my desires], and a fighter against my enemies, and a guide for me to Paradise, and a driver away from the Hellfire (by which what is lawful and unlawful is distinguished).

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uk. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammaita bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbi, wa nuura sadrii, wa jalaa'a huznii, wa dhahaaba hammii, wa 'awna lii 'ala al-hawaa, wa mujahidan lii 'ala al- a'daa', wa dalilan lii ila al-jannah, wa qaa'idan lii ila an-naar (yufassalu bihi al-halalu wal-haram).

When to Read

This profound supplication is excellent for reciting during times of reflection, especially when reflecting on our actions and the potential sins committed by our limbs. It's particularly beneficial when seeking solace from distress, when facing desires that lead us astray, or when contemplating our journey towards Allah. You can make this dua any time, but it's especially powerful when making tawbah (repentance) or seeking guidance.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be sincere and present our needs to Allah. When reciting this dua, ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, facing the Qiblah. Raise your hands as the Prophet ﷺ would do when making supplication. Pour your heart into the words, reflecting on their meaning and your deep need for Allah's mercy. Be certain that Allah hears you and is capable of answering.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's help through His most beautiful names. It asks for the Qur'an to be a source of life and light for the heart and soul, a means to overcome sadness and worry. It also specifically requests divine assistance in controlling desires, fighting against wrongdoings, and guiding us towards Jannah and away from Jahannam. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an a differentiator between lawful and unlawful, it implicitly seeks protection from sins committed by our limbs.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'No servant suffers a worry or grief and says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the guide away from my worries, but Allah will remove his worry and grief and replace them with joy.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He replied: 'Certainly, yes. It is incumbent upon everyone who hears this after me to learn it.' (Narrated by Ahmad, and also by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih)
