Virtues & Benefits
This dua, particularly when uttered immediately after a sin, acts as a spiritual antidote. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that whoever says this, Allah forgives him, even if he had fled from the battlefield (which is a major sin). This highlights the immense mercy and forgiving nature of Allah when we turn to Him sincerely and promptly. It signifies that no sin is too great for Allah's forgiveness if true repentance follows.
Source & Authentication
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever says: 'Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him,' one hundred times, will have his sins forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). Another narration in Sahih Muslim (2709) states: 'Verily, I say: 'Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him,' one hundred times in a day.' He (the narrator) said: 'His sins would be forgiven even if they were as abundant as the foam of the sea.' Sahih Muslim also reports that whoever says: 'Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh' (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, I seek forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance), Allah writes for him a white garment which will not be stained until the Day of Resurrection. This specific wording serves as an immediate spiritual cleansing mechanism, turning a negative act into an opportunity for immense reward.
