Dua for a Humble Heart in Repentance

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3405

O Allah, I ask You for a heart that is humble and submissive (to You), a tongue that remembers You, deeds that are accepted, and a pure heart.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban khashi'an, wa lisanan dhakiran, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan, wa qalban saliman.

When to Read

This dua is particularly fitting during times of seeking repentance (tawbah) and asking for Allah's forgiveness. Recite it after your obligatory prayers, during the late hours of the night when supplication is most potent, or whenever you feel a need to reconnect with Allah and purify your heart. It’s a beautiful way to begin any personal reflection or spiritual practice, setting the intention for sincerity.

How to Read

Begin by making wudu (ablution). Face the Qiblah (direction of prayer). Raise your hands to the level of your shoulders. Begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then, recite this dua with sincerity and focus, visualizing your heart softening and your devotion increasing. Reflect on the meaning of each word as you say it. Conclude by asking Allah for acceptance and by making other supplications as needed.

Virtues & Benefits

A humble heart is a cornerstone of sincere repentance. When our hearts are humble, we are more receptive to Allah's guidance and less prone to arrogance, which is a major barrier to tawbah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Allah has revealed to me that you should humble yourselves and not boast against one another, nor should one oppress another.' (Sahih Muslim 1717). This dua helps cultivate a heart that is soft, mindful of Allah, and truly seeking His pleasure, leading to accepted deeds and a sound inner state.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness). And he would supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban khashi'an, wa lisanan dhakiran, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan, wa qalban saliman.' (O Allah, I ask You for a heart that is humble, a tongue that remembers You, deeds that are accepted, and a pure heart). And he would supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min khair ma sa'alaka minhu nabiyyuka Muhammad ﷺ, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'aadha minhu nabiyyuka Muhammad ﷺ. Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.' (O Allah, I ask You for the good that Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked You for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil that Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sought refuge from. Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the [life] hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire). - Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3405
