A Sincere Plea for Forgiveness: Dua for Repentance

Repentance & Tawbah
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3849

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have bestowed upon Yourself, or You revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have retained in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sorrow and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammaita bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been distressed, and my heart has been worried.' He said: 'Say: Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammaita bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.' I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have bestowed upon Yourself, or You revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have retained in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sorrow and a reliever of my anxiety.) The man said: 'So I said that, and Allah removed my distress and my worry.'
