A Prophet's Plea for Protection from the Greatest Sin: Dua for Repentance from Shirk

Repentance & Tawbah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2719

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating any partner with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I associate with You unknowingly.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lamu, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lamu

When to Read

This profound supplication should be recited frequently, especially after obligatory prayers. It's particularly vital to utter this when reflecting on one's faith, when feeling distant from Allah, or when exposed to situations that might subtly lead to acts of shirk, whether intentional or unintentional.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Understand the gravity of shirk, the associating of partners with Allah, which is the gravest of sins. Reflect on the meaning: acknowledging both what you know of your potential shortcomings and seeking forgiveness for what might be hidden even from yourself. Raising your hands during this dua, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ in many supplications, can enhance its sincerity.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct plea to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for protection against shirk, the unforgivable sin if one dies upon it without repentance. By seeking refuge from knowingly associating partners with Allah and asking forgiveness for the unknowing, we actively safeguard our Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). It purifies our intentions and actions, ensuring our worship is solely for Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught this to protect himself and his Ummah from falling into this dangerous error, highlighting its critical importance for a sound faith.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Musa that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O people, fear this shirk, for it is more hidden than the crawling of an ant." They said: "And how can we fear it when it is more hidden than the crawling of an ant, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min an ushrika bika shai'an wa ana a'lamu, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lamu (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating any partner with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I associate with You unknowingly)." -- Sahih Muslim 2719
