Saying "Inni Saim" When Insulted While Fasting

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 1894 (Bukhari), 1151 (Muslim)

إِنِّي امْرُؤٌ صَائِمٌ

Indeed, I am a person who is fasting.

Inni imru'un sa'im

When to Read

This is a response, not a proactive dua. Recite it verbally or internally when someone verbally abuses, curses, or attempts to provoke you while you are observing your fast. It's a way to deflect negativity and remind yourself, and perhaps the aggressor, of the sanctity of your fast.

How to Read

When faced with insults or provocation during your fast, instead of retaliating or engaging in an argument, you should calmly say, 'Inni imru'un sa'im' (Indeed, I am a person who is fasting). This can be said aloud or thought to yourself. The key is to de-escalate the situation and maintain the spiritual state of your fast.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this beautiful principle. It's not about weakness, but about recognizing the immense spiritual value of fasting. By responding with 'Inni sa'im,' you: 1. **Preserve your fast:** The primary goal is to avoid sin and keep your fast pure, which can be compromised by anger and arguments. 2. **Earn immense reward:** Fasting is for Allah, and He rewards it directly. By abstaining from harsh words and actions, you are upholding the spirit of fasting, which is to control desires and actions. 3. **Reflect Islamic etiquette (Adab):** It demonstrates patience, self-control, and a higher moral standing, embodying the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. Fasting is a shield, and this response helps maintain that shield's integrity.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Allah the Almighty said: Fasting is for Me and I will reward it. He gives up his desires, his food and his drink for My sake. The fast is for Me and the reward for it is immense. Fasting is a shield. When any one of you is fasting on a day, he should not indulge in uttering ribaldry or quarreling, or make a disturbing noise. Should anyone revile him or quarrel with him, he should say: 'I am fasting. I am fasting.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894, Sahih Muslim 1151). The phrase 'I am fasting' here corresponds to the Arabic 'Inni sa'im' which the Prophet ﷺ advised saying in response to provocation.
