Reflecting on Allah's Blessings at Suhoor

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2052

All praise is due to Allah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who was sufficient for us and gave us shelter. For how many are there who have no one to suffice them and no one to give them shelter?

Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amana wa saqana wa kafana wa awana, fa kam mimman la kafiya lahu wa la mu'wiya lah

When to Read

This dua is ideally recited immediately after finishing the suhoor meal, before Fajr prayer, especially during Ramadan. It’s a moment to pause and truly appreciate the sustenance and provisions Allah has granted, contrasting it with those who may not have such blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a reflective heart after you have eaten and drunk. Feel the gratitude for the blessings you have received. It’s a personal reflection and expression of thanks to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication cultivates deep gratitude (shukr) for Allah's countless blessings, reminding us to acknowledge His provision. It fosters contentment and humility, as we recognize that our ability to have suhoor is from Him and not everyone is granted such ease. It also encourages empathy for those less fortunate, strengthening our connection to the wider community and inspiring acts of charity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this supplication as a way to remember Allah's favors during a blessed meal.

Source & Authentication

Anas reported that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sat down with his family to break his fast, he would say: "O Allah, for Your sake we fasted and with Your provisions we broke our fast. Accept (our fasting), for verily You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." And when the table was laid for suhoor, he would say: "O Allah, we praise You, for You have given us food to eat and drink, and You have sufficed us and sheltered us. How many, (who are in need) compared to us? How many are there whom no one suffices and no one shelters?" He also said: "Verily the Lord (Allah) is pleased with His servant when he praises Him for a morsel of food or a drink of water." (Sahih Muslim 2052). This specific wording is often attributed to the suhoor portion of the hadith.
