Dua When Providing Iftar to Others

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1700

May the fasting ones break their fast with you, and may the righteous eat your food. May the angels pray for you, and may the fasting ones break their fast with you, and may the righteous eat your food. May Allah forgive your sins, accept your food, and send His prayers upon you. And may you have the like of that.

Aftara 'indakum-us-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakum-ul-abraru, wa sallat 'alaykum-ul-mala'ikatu, wa aftara 'indakum-us-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakum-ul-abraru, wa ghafara-llahu lakum dhunubakum, wa taqabbala minkum ta'amakum, wa salla 'alaykum, wa lakum mithlu dhalik.

When to Read

This dua is recited by the host when inviting fasting individuals to break their fast at their home, after they have finished their meal.

How to Read

The host should recite this beautiful dua with sincerity and a welcoming heart for their guests. It's a prayer for the guests, asking Allah to bless them and the host alike. The emphasis is on gratitude and seeking Allah's acceptance for the act of feeding those who are fasting.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses profound blessings for both the guests and the host. It asks that the fasting guests find their iftar with the host to be a source of benefit, that the food shared is eaten by the righteous, signifying acceptance and purity. It also calls for the angels to pray for the host and for their sins to be forgiven. This act of feeding a fasting person is highly rewarded in Islam, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without the reward of the fasting person being reduced in any way.' (Sahih Muslim 1147). This dua amplifies that reward by asking for divine acceptance and blessings for the entire occasion.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Al-Harith that he was with the Prophet ﷺ and some people came and broke their fast with him. When they departed, he said: 'Aftara 'indakum-us-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakum-ul-abraru, wa sallat 'alaykum-ul-mala'ikatu, wa aftara 'indakum-us-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakum-ul-abraru, wa ghafara-llahu lakum dhunubakum, wa taqabbala minkum ta'amakum, wa salla 'alaykum, wa lakum mithlu dhalik.' (The translation of this is: May the fasting ones break their fast with you, and may the righteous eat your food. May the angels pray for you, and may the fasting ones break their fast with you, and may the righteous eat your food. May Allah forgive your sins, accept your food, and send His prayers upon you. And may you have the like of that.)
