O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.
When to Read
This dua is particularly relevant during fasting, especially Ramadan. When the physical discomfort of hunger and thirst, or the spiritual discipline of abstaining from certain actions, leads to feelings of irritation or impatience, this supplication can be a powerful shield. Recite it when you feel your temper rising, when small annoyances become magnified, or when you sense your mood darkening due to the fast.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt awareness of Allah's power and your own dependence on Him. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, recognizing that true peace and well-being come from Allah alone. It's best recited with raised hands, as is customary for many supplications, though this is not a strict condition. Repeat it diligently whenever you feel the need, especially during the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) or after prayers.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking refuge in Allah from the loss of blessings, changes in well-being, sudden punishment, and His anger encompasses a comprehensive plea for holistic protection. When fasting, our patience is tested, and irritations can easily arise. By reciting this dua, we are proactively asking Allah to safeguard us from the internal and external factors that can disrupt our peace and diminish the reward of our fast. It helps us maintain composure and inner tranquility, ensuring our worship is accepted and that we remain mindful of Allah's favor and pleasure.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them the supplication for the whole period of the time between the two prayers (i.e., between Dhuhr and 'Asr) with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.) It was also narrated from him that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah by saying these words at the end of the prayers: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hadathi wa'l-hadathayn, wa a'udhu bika min al-shirki wa'l-mushrikin, wa a'udhu bika min al-dalalati aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw azlim aw uzlam, aw ajhal aw yujhal 'alayya.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from error and mistakes, and I seek refuge in You from associating partners with You and from the polytheists, and I seek refuge in You from going astray or being led astray, or slipping or causing others to slip, or being unjust or being treated unjustly, or being ignorant or being treated ignorantly.)
