Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2716

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ وَشَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and the evil of what I have not done.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa sharri ma lam a'mal

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant during fasting, especially in Ramadan, when one is striving for spiritual purity and heightened awareness. If you find yourself uttering a harsh word, backbiting, or engaging in idle chatter, you can turn to this supplication immediately. It's a general dua for seeking protection from the negative consequences of our actions, both those we've committed and those we've failed to do (like good deeds we should have performed). It's a moment of reflection and a plea for divine covering over our shortcomings.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's protection from the consequences of your speech and other actions. It can be recited verbally, preferably with awareness and presence of heart. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of controlling our speech, and this dua is a way to seek help in fulfilling that noble aim. Make it a personal plea, acknowledging your own fallibility and reliance on Allah's mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua not only seeks protection from the evil consequences of actual sins but also from the 'evil of what I have not done.' This encompasses the missed opportunities for good deeds and the spiritual harm that comes from neglecting our duties. For the fasting person, it’s a powerful way to acknowledge that even with the best intentions, slips can happen, and to seek Allah's forgiveness and protection. It encourages humility and a constant return to Allah for guidance and strength, especially vital when fasting aims to train us in self-restraint, including in speech.
