Dua for the Fasting Person Experiencing Extreme Hunger or Thirst

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1683

الصَّائِمُ إِذَا أَكَلَ وَشَرِبَ نَسِيَ فِي رَمَضَانَ، لِأَنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي مَتَى يُفْطِرُ

The fasting person, when they eat and drink, they forget in Ramadan, because they do not know when they are to break their fast.

As-sa'imu idha akala wa shariba nasia fi Ramadan, li'annahu la yadri mata yufṭir.

When to Read

This understanding is particularly relevant during Ramadan. When you find yourself experiencing intense hunger or thirst, remember this hadith. It's a reminder that the discomfort is temporary and a part of the spiritual discipline of fasting. Instead of complaining, focus on the intention behind your fast and the immense reward that lies ahead. You can reflect on this while fasting, especially during the most challenging hours.

How to Read

This isn't a specific supplication with set words. Rather, it's a profound insight into the nature of fasting and the spiritual state of the one observing it. When you feel extreme hunger or thirst, remember this principle. Let it transform your feeling of discomfort into a feeling of spiritual elevation. Instead of seeking relief through a specific dua, remind yourself of the wisdom behind the fast, the fact that you are doing it for Allah, and that the end of the day (and thus, breaking the fast) is drawing near. This remembrance and acceptance is itself a form of dua.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit is the spiritual reframe it offers. Instead of viewing hunger and thirst as mere physical hardships, this understanding elevates them to a spiritual experience. It fosters patience (sabr) and reliance on Allah (tawakkul). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned, 'The dua of the fasting person is not rejected.' (Sunan Ibn Abi Dawud 1986). While this hadith refers to a specific supplication at Iftar, the principle of the fasting person's supplications being heard applies to their state of being as well. By accepting the hardship with a good intention, you are inherently making a powerful statement to Allah.
