Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2012

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

O Allah, You are Oft-Forgiving, and You love the one who forgives, so forgive me.

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni

When to Read

This is the most recommended dua to recite during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd-numbered nights, as these are the nights Laylat al-Qadr is sought. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged increasing devotion and supplication during this time.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, reflecting on Allah's attribute of being the Oft-Forgiving. It's best recited during your voluntary prayers (qiyam), while prostrating, or at any moment during the night when you can supplicate. Focus on seeking Allah's pardon for your shortcomings and sins.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is specifically linked to seeking forgiveness during the blessed nights of Ramadan. The Prophet's ﷺ teaching of this dua to his wife 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) highlights its immense significance for this period. By sincerely asking for Allah's forgiveness, we hope to purify ourselves and gain His pleasure, especially during a time when our deeds are greatly rewarded.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I say if I realize Laylat al-Qadr?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are Oft-Forgiving, and You love the one who forgives, so forgive me).'
