Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal khasireen
When to Read
This powerful dua, recited by our father Adam (peace be upon him) and his wife Hawa (Eve) after their mistake, is especially potent during Ramadan. The month itself is a season of immense mercy, and our prayers are believed to be heard more readily. You can recite this dua anytime, but consider making it a staple during Suhoor, after Iftar, during Taraweeh prayers, or at any moment you feel a pang of regret or a desire to reconnect with Allah.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere remorse and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Recognize your shortcomings and the sins you may have committed, even unintentionally. Understand that acknowledging your wrongdoing is the first step towards seeking forgiveness. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the Sunnah during many instances of seeking dua, and imbue your recitation with humility and hope. Remember that Allah loves those who turn back to Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct plea from the Quran, taught by Allah Himself. It signifies profound repentance and reliance on Allah's forgiveness and mercy. By reciting it, especially during Ramadan, we tap into the special blessings of this month, aiming to purify our souls and emerge with our sins forgiven. The Quran tells us: 'And those who, when they commit an immorality or do wrong to their own souls, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [they] do not persist in what they did while they know.' (Al-Imran 3:135). Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to cleanse ourselves, and this dua is a key tool for that spiritual renewal.
