Dua for Remembering Allah During Fasting: The Coolness of Faith

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 1904 (Bukhari), 1151 (Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The fasting person has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast, and a joy when he meets his Lord. And the odor that comes from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the scent of musk.'

Qāla Rasūlullahi ṣallā Allāhu 'alayhi wa sallam: "Liṣ-ṣā'imi farḥatāni: farḥatun 'inda fiṭrihi, wa farḥatun 'inda liqā'i Rabbihi, wa la-khulūfu famiṣ-ṣā'imi aṭyabu 'indAllāhi min rīḥil-misk."

When to Read

This profound hadith isn't a specific dua to recite, but a reminder of the spiritual essence of fasting. We should reflect on these two joys throughout the day, especially when feeling the physical strain of hunger or thirst. It's a perfect thought to bring to mind during suhoor, after Maghrib prayer, and when contemplating the immense blessings of Allah during Ramadan. Let these words elevate our intention and our experience of worship.

How to Read

This is not a recited dua, but a principle to internalize. Ponder the meaning of 'two joys' and the 'odor better than musk.' Let this understanding shape your inner state. Recognize that the temporary discomfort of fasting is a path to immense spiritual reward and a deep connection with your Creator. Maintain mindfulness of Allah (dhikr) throughout your fast, remembering His pleasure is the ultimate goal.

Virtues & Benefits

This hadith highlights the immense spiritual value of fasting. The 'odor' that comes from the fasting person’s mouth, a natural consequence of abstaining from food and drink, is described as being more beloved to Allah than the finest perfume. This signifies that Allah values the sincere effort and sacrifice of the fasting individual above worldly pleasantries. The two joys mentioned are the immediate satisfaction upon breaking the fast and the ultimate, unparalleled joy of meeting Allah in the Hereafter, a reward for sincere obedience. It encourages patience and perseverance, reminding us that every aspect of our worship, even the seemingly mundane, holds profound significance in the Sight of Allah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: "Fasting is for Me and I will reward it, and the good deed is multiplied ten times, except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will reward it. For he abandons his food and his drink and his enjoyment for My sake. The fasting person has two joys: a joy when he breaks his fast, and a joy when he meets his Lord. And the odor that comes from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the scent of musk."'
