Dua for Protection from Temptations and Negative Desires While Fasting

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2660

يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ وَعَلَى طَاعَتِكَ

O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion and upon Your obedience.

Ya muqallib-al-quloobi, thabbit qalbi 'ala deenika wa 'ala ta'atika

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent during Ramadan, especially when fasting. The physical abstinence from food and drink can sometimes intensify internal struggles with desires and temptations. Reciting this dua regularly, especially in the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) or after prayers, helps fortify the heart against any negative inclinations that might arise.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation, understanding that our hearts are in the hands of Allah. Visualize your heart being strengthened and anchored to His deen (religion) and obedience. Make it a personal plea, acknowledging your reliance on Him for steadfastness. It's best recited with hands raised, as is the Sunnah for supplication, though it can be recited at any time and in any state.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the core of temptation – the heart. By asking Allah, the Turner of hearts, to keep our hearts firm on His religion and obedience, we are seeking protection from straying. During fasting, when our physical desires are suppressed, our spiritual resolve is tested. This supplication helps ensure that our obedience remains focused on Allah alone, guarding us against any inner urges that contradict our fasting state or our faith. It’s a profound acknowledgment of our dependence on Allah for maintaining our spiritual integrity.
