Dua for Overcoming Laziness During Voluntary Fasting

Ramadan & Fasting
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from senility and cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and from being overcome by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-harami wal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you feel the urge of laziness creeping in, especially during voluntary fasts. You can recite it at any time, but making it a habit to say it *before* you start your day or when you first feel that dip in energy during your fast can be very effective. Think of it as a proactive measure against the whispers of idleness.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly asking Allah (SWT) for protection against these negative traits. Imagine yourself actively pushing against the laziness, seeking strength from your Creator. It's best recited when you are in a state of ghusl or wudu, though not strictly required for this specific supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah (SWT) from laziness (kasal) is a profound way to cultivate inner strength and willpower. By recognizing that this weakness is something we need divine help to overcome, we open ourselves to Allah's support. This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, acknowledges that true strength comes from Him. Overcoming laziness during fasting not only allows us to fulfill the spiritual purpose of the fast more effectively but also builds discipline for all aspects of our lives. It helps us to remain active in worship and good deeds, even when our body feels tired.
