Dua for Laylatul Qadr: Seeking Allah's Forgiveness and Well-being

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3851

O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your magnificence that I be consumed from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'adhamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly fitting for Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged increased supplication during this blessed night, urging us to ask Allah for His forgiveness and comprehensive well-being. While it can be recited at any time, its deep reliance on seeking Allah's encompassing protection and pardon makes it especially poignant during Ramadan, and most especially on Laylatul Qadr when our duas carry immense weight.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt submission to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each request, visualizing Allah's mercy and protection enveloping you. It is recommended to raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet ﷺ would do. Begin with praise of Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and conclude by wiping your hands over your face after the dua, as was his practice.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is profoundly beneficial as it encompasses seeking both spiritual and worldly well-being. 'Al-'Afw' (pardon) is a request for forgiveness of sins, which purifies the heart and earns Allah's pleasure. 'Al-'Afiyah' (well-being) is a comprehensive term asking for protection from all forms of harm, illness, hardship, and distress, both in this life and the next. By asking for protection in all directions – front, back, right, left, above, and below – you are seeking Allah's complete guardianship. This covers every aspect of your existence, safeguarding you from seen and unseen dangers. The request for refuge from being consumed from beneath signifies protection from sudden calamities or the earth swallowing one up, a potent expression of seeking total security in Allah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Aishah that she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr?' He said: 'Say: O Allah, indeed You are forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850). This hadith is about a specific dua for Laylatul Qadr. The one provided above (Sunan Ibn Majah 3851) is a more general, yet comprehensive dua that is highly appropriate for seeking the best in Laylatul Qadr due to its all-encompassing nature of seeking Allah's pardon and well-being.
