Dua for Laylat al-Qadr: Seeking Forgiveness and Blessings

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3846

O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Might from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'afwaw wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afwaw wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is particularly potent during Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree. It's ideal for the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on odd-numbered nights, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged seeking it during this blessed period. Recite it during your prayers, after your obligatory salah, or whenever you find yourself in a state of devotion and remembrance.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart. Raise your hands as you would in prayer, seeking Allah's mercy. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the request for forgiveness ('afw) and comprehensive well-being ('afiyah). Reflect on Allah's power to protect and conceal, and His ability to grant peace and security in all aspects of your life. It's a profound request for both spiritual purity and worldly safety.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound request for both spiritual and physical well-being. Seeking 'afw (forgiveness) purifies us from sins, while 'afiyah (well-being) encompasses health, safety, peace, and contentment in this life and the next. The Prophet's ﷺ deep reliance on Allah for protection against all forms of harm, seen and unseen, is evident. Asking Allah to conceal our faults and secure our fears brings immense peace of mind, especially during the heightened spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan and the seeking of Laylat al-Qadr.

The narration states that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say during it?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'afwaw wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-'afwaw wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'azamatika an ughtala min tahti' (O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Might from being struck from beneath me)." — Sunan Ibn Majah 3846.
