Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment (free from want).' Sunan Ibn Majah 3850. While this specific hadith is a general supplication for piety, the theme of seeking increased Taqwa is central to the purpose of fasting. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also said: 'Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, and bad manners, Allah has no need of his leaving his food and drink.'
