Dua for Beginning Taraweeh Prayer

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 632

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed be Your name, and exalted be Your majesty. There is no god but You.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.

When to Read

This is the opening supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite at the beginning of his prayers, including voluntary night prayers like Taraweeh. You can recite it after making your intention for Taraweeh and before reciting Surah Al-Fatihah in the first rak'ah.

How to Read

Recite this dua quietly after the Adhan and Iqamah (if applicable for Taraweeh in congregation) or after you have settled down to pray. It's meant to be a private moment of glorification and seeking Allah's help before commencing the formal prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua sets a beautiful tone for prayer, reminding us of Allah's perfection, His boundless praise, and His supreme status. It helps focus the heart and mind on the one being worshipped, preparing us for a more meaningful connection. It was a practice of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, so following it is a way of drawing closer to his Sunnah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up for prayer at night, he would start by saying: 'Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed be Your name, and exalted be Your majesty. There is no god but You.)
