Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5080

O Allah, Originator of creation, You originated Your creation without error, and You will return to it without regret. My Lord, expand my chest for me and make my task easy for me, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this world and the good of the Hereafter, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter. My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [also] from my offspring. Our Lord, and accept my supplication. Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.

Allahumma ya mubdi'a al-khalqi, bada'ta khalqaka bila 'ismatin, wa 'udta ilayhi bila nadamin. Rabbi-shrash li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ad-dunya wa sharri al-akhirah. Allahumma as'aluka khayra ad-dunya wa khayra al-akhirah, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ad-dunya wa sharri al-akhirah. Rabbi-j'alni muqim as-salati wa min dhurriyyati, Rabbana wa taqabbal du'a'. Rabbana-ghfir li wa li walidayya wa lil mu'minina yawma yaqumu al-hisab.

When to Read

The day of Ashura (the 10th of Muharram) is a day of significant historical events in Islamic tradition. While the core of this dua focuses on seeking Allah’s protection and forgiveness for oneself, family, and the believers, it is particularly poignant to recite it on Ashura. This day marks the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions at Karbala. Reflecting on these events, we turn to Allah with this supplication, seeking His mercy and forgiveness, and His strength to uphold righteousness. It can be recited at any time during the day, but it’s especially meaningful during the blessed days of Muharram.

How to Read

This comprehensive dua should be recited with sincere intention and humility. Begin by acknowledging Allah's power as the Originator of creation. Ask for inner peace and ease in your affairs, seeking refuge from worldly and otherworldly troubles. Explicitly ask for the best of both worlds and protection from their evils. Pray for yourself and your descendants to be steadfast in prayer. Finally, implore Allah to forgive you, your parents, and all believers on the Day of Judgment. It’s recommended to raise your hands during the supplication, as is the practice when making dua. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and imbue it with genuine yearning for Allah's acceptance.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a broad range of requests essential for a Muslim's well-being in this life and the next. By seeking Allah's protection from evil and His bestowal of good, we safeguard ourselves from afflictions and gain His blessings. The request for an easy affair and expanded chest relates to spiritual and emotional resilience, enabling us to face life's challenges with patience and strength. The prayer for oneself and one's descendants to be steadfast in prayer highlights the importance of establishing the connection with Allah and ensuring its continuation through generations. The ultimate plea for forgiveness for oneself, parents, and all believers on the Day of Judgment underscores the communal aspect of Islam and the deep desire for Allah's mercy for the entire Ummah.
