Dua for Ashura: Reflecting on Karbala and Seeking Forgiveness

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1539

O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

The day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) is a significant day in Islamic history, marked by the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions at Karbala. While this specific dua is for general supplication, the spirit of Ashura encourages reflection on the sacrifices made and a renewed commitment to justice and faith. It is also a day when fasting is recommended. This dua, focusing on seeking beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds, is fitting to recite on this day as we remember these profound events and turn to Allah for guidance and strength. Recite it especially after Fajr prayer and throughout the day.

How to Read

Ensure you are in a state of purity (Wudu). Face the Qiblah if possible. Begin with sincere intention and humility. Recite the blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ first, as this is a way to have your own duas accepted. Then, present your specific requests to Allah. Reflect on the meaning of the words as you recite them. Conclude by praising Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking the best in this life and the hereafter. Beneficial knowledge guides us to the truth and helps us navigate life's challenges. Good provision (rizq tayyib) means sustenance that is pure, lawful, and blessed. Accepted deeds are those that are performed sincerely for Allah's pleasure and in accordance with His commands, leading to reward in this life and the next. Reciting blessings on the Prophet ﷺ before making dua is a Sunnah that increases the likelihood of acceptance.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say these words upon rising for prayer at night. (Note: While the context of the hadith describes the Prophet ﷺ reciting this upon rising for Tahajjud, the dua itself is comprehensive and its meaning makes it suitable for other occasions, especially when seeking these specific blessings.)
