Dua for Allah's Guidance in Understanding and Implementing Islamic Knowledge During Ramadan

Ramadan & Fasting
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 254

اَللّٰهُمَّ فَقِّهْنِيْ فِي الدِّيْنِ وَ عَلِّمْنِيْ التَّأْوِيْلَ

O Allah, grant me deep understanding of the religion and teach me the interpretation (of the Quran).

Allahumma faqqihni fid-deen wa 'allimnit-ta'weel

When to Read

This is a powerful supplication that can be recited at any time, but it carries special weight during Ramadan. As we dedicate this month to spiritual reflection and increased worship, it's the perfect moment to ask Allah for the clarity to truly grasp His message. You can say it after your obligatory prayers, during your personal supplications (duas), or even while breaking your fast, a time when Allah's mercy is abundant.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you would in any other supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Focus on the meaning: you're not just asking for knowledge, but for the wisdom to understand its true meaning and the ability to live by it. Repeat it consistently, especially during these blessed days.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking this specific knowledge is crucial. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself made this dua for his uncle, Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), as recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah. By asking for 'fiqh' (deep understanding), we seek more than just memorization; we ask for the ability to comprehend the wisdom and practical application of Islamic teachings. Learning 'ta'weel' (interpretation) is essential for understanding the Quran's deeper meanings, allowing us to connect with Allah's words on a profound level. During Ramadan, this understanding helps us to maximize the spiritual benefits of fasting, prayer, and reflection, transforming our worship from mere ritual into a deeply meaningful connection with our Creator.

Source & Authentication

The hadith states: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) put his hand on my shoulder and said: 'O Allah, teach him the Book (Quran).' (Sunan Ibn Majah 254). Another narration from Ibn Majah (254) mentions: 'O Allah, teach him wisdom.' The scholars have understood 'ta'weel' (interpretation) and 'fiqh' (understanding of religion) to encompass the essence of this dua when seeking knowledge.
